In this first post I will be discussing how I planned my escape from the 9 to 5 rat race and some steps you could follow to perhaps escape yours. Here are the steps that I used:
1. Ask yourself why you want to quit.
Are you looking to have more time to do the things you love? Are you looking for more income more money? Are you trying to follow your passion? Or do you just want a different lifestyle?
Whatever it is, make sure you feel strongly about it and that you are determined to see it through 'till its finished. That being said, being self-employed is very rewarding BUT may not be for everyone.
One of the things I learned in my own experience and while networking with other entrepreneurs was that you should plan ahead, take steps towards the top, then take a leap of faith. Not everyone may be able to make this leap but the ones that do will embark on an entrepreneurial journey that will be sure to set your ass on fire.
You will either:
A: become successful at what you really wanted to do
B: you might fail but even if you do at least you knew you gave it a shot and hey whats the worst that can happen? You go back to a regular 9-5 instead of wondering "What if?" all your life.
Sounds a little crazy right? Thats what I thought as well...
While I was working my 9 to 5 corporate job, I felt trapped. Waking up early, going to work, being told what to do, coming home tired, going to sleep and doing the same shit almost every day was not my idea of "living life".
My parents traveled too far (from Asia) and worked too damn hard for me to be stuck with a mediocre job, doing the same thing every day, with okay pay.
Of course, I could follow most people and "climb the corporate ladder" and potentially make six-figures but how long would that take-10 years?! Would that be enough to allow me to live the lifestyle I wanted to live? Would that position be directly aligned to my values, beliefs and how I wanted to truly live my life?
I thought to myself... there must be another way. Another way I could have more time and freedom doing the things that I love without having to work so damn hard and mindlessly for it.
This led me to a search frenzy. I personally started researching hundreds of "How to make money online" videos and articles of people who went against the grain and chose a different path from the usual 9 to 5 grind.
2. Research and pick a Niche
Picking a niche (a topic) may be one of the most difficult things to do if you want to venture off in your own business.
When picking a niche, I suggest picking something you have some sort of experience and expertise in, have the most connections with, and of course something you would truly enjoy doing.
Try finding something that doesn't have too much competition but also if there is even a demand for it. Once you've done that, try researching online and networking in your local area or find sources/suppliers online who can provide you with that specific product or service you are looking for and ask people in your industry that have major influence and have done what you are trying to achieve.
If you're not interested in selling a tangible product you can always try selling a service, such as consulting, or create your own virtual product such as e-books, online courses, or posting videos on Youtube to get paid on advertising/endorsements. There are tons of ways of making money online you just have to go out there and find them.
While I was working at my 9 to 5, I luckily had the opportunity to become a re-seller for a company I used to work for selling car parts. I realized that they had a drop-shipping program which allowed me to quickly get started and sell their products online.
The beauty of the drop-shipping business was that I could be anywhere in the world and make money selling stuff online without having to hold any inventory!!! This was a game-changer for me because all I had to do was post an item up for sale online with a marked up price, collect the payment and shipping info from the customer then tell the drop-shipper/supplier where to ship the item to.
Business was slow at first since I didn't have many listings published but once I took the time and posted more, I sold more and more. While working my 9 to 5 I would spend my breaks and my lunch posting up more listings and in about 6 months time, the money I was making selling car parts on the side was making more money than my 9 to 5 job.
I knew at this moment that I needed to take this thing to the next level. I had to decide what direction I wanted to head towards.
3. Quitting your 9 to 5
I know this may sound crazy but I think this is necessary if you truly want to take full responsibility and let your side business, your baby, grow to its full potential.
I would advise to make sure that you have saved a comfortable amount of money to act as a safety-net to keep you afloat in case of any unforeseen roadblocks you may face while on your entrepreneurial journey.
After realizing that my side business was making more than my main job, I reviewed my average net take home from the business and subtracted my expenses and calculated what I needed to make to at least break even and stay afloat. The numbers looked good so I took a calculated risk and took a leap of faith!
I was now free from corporate life and had time to focus and plan my own schedule on things that I was passionate about. I knew it wasn't going to be an easy road to tackle but I knew from my gut feeling it was necessary, it felt right. I knew initially that I would have to put in even more hours than my 9 to 5 to stay afloat.
The beauty of this business was the ROI and the residual income I received from it. I literally was making money in my sleep and I loved it. With every business there is a risk involved but if you do your research, you can eliminate the fear and lower your risk.
Now after reading this some of you may still feel like this might not be for you and I totally get it.
Remember this is solely based off my own experiences and I cannot speak for anyone but myself. What I strived to provide was to give a general idea of what is out there and what is possible.
There are people out there selling perfume, clothes, lights, electronics, e-books, their services, and much more and it is up to you to keep searching and keep trying until you find what works for you.
Finally, one thing I must say is DON'T give me or anyone the BS excuse of, "I don't have time." This is the lamest excuse ever.
The way I see it, if you truly wanted something, you would prioritize and make time for it. Whether it's becoming more financially responsible, more fit or making a relationship better, you CAN do it.
The fact that you read this far shows that you had enough time to read this means you are at least thinking about it and you just need a little push if anything. Feel free to contact me here if you need any inspiration, motivation, coaching, or anything.
Remember above all, have fun and enjoy the journey while trying to reach your destination. Everything takes time, practice, and patience and the more time you spend doing it, the better you will be.
No one can decide where you go in life but yourself. Take action... any action and START NOW!!!
Your dream life is waiting for you...
